Let’s Sip and Chat about This and That (audio poem)

I wrote this poetic prose for others, like me, who might be missing relaxed, yet meaningful coffee chats, that can be sipped and heard without a mask. If given a chance to meet up for a brewed cup, I hope your coffee dates are lucky enough to include mutual and carefree conversation about things that lighten you and your coffee date up.

Let’s Sip and Chat about This and That (audio poem)
Let’s grab a coffee or tea and chat about this and that
but, before we catch up, there are a few things you should know …

If you are wanting to discuss the latest streaming episodes
I will nod and attentively listen as you chat about your favorite shows
but, my limited television consumption might disappoint
my interest in the plot will be genuine; an effort to watch, I will make
but, my well-intentioned promise to you (and me), I will break
A lopsided chat about televised this and that

If you are wanting to discuss the race for President of the United States
I will nod and briefly listen as you chat about policies and attributes you defend or hate
but, my astute analysis, or two cents, are best saved for my ballot on election day
my interests in equality, the environment, education, healthcare, and freedoms are genuine
but, my civic attention is given to local politicians or strangers when offering them a petition
A lopsided chat about politicized this and that

If you are wanting to discuss updates on the global pandemic, stealing jobs and ending lives
I will nod and solemnly listen as you lament about increasing statistics and shifting guidelines
but, my focus will wane when remembering a loved one, making me put daily numbers aside
my interest in everyone’s safety is of upmost importance, to ignore is to gamble with life and death
but, my rambling on or attempting to predict a future unknown is a waste of our precious breath
A lopsided chat about COVID this and that

If you are wanting to discuss music, writing, photography, spirituality, or reminisce about travel
I will perk up and lean in and the rest of our time together will deliciously unravel
but, please don’t take it personally if I want to wrap up and leave too soon
my interests, I love to discuss, but doing so makes me want to get back to doing what I love
but, if you want to keep sipping for fifteen more minutes, share your favorite poem or song lyrics
A balanced chat about enjoyable this and that

I look forward to our chat; I miss you so much
I look forward to hugging and laughing, and java, hot
like steam from our cup, some words might lift, then drop
some spilled words may be balanced, others might not
I do not expect my favorite interests to be yours too
I do not mind nodding and listening to another point of view
What I care most about, is you

But, if you don’t mind, when we next meet again
let’s drop everything, especially lopsided chat
and share a quiet moment without our masks
let’s dance and communicate with limbs and eyes
let’s focus a lens and capture the perfect sunrise
let’s share a sacred space and pray or meditate
let’s watch waves crest and be drawn away
Balanced moments about this and that

Thank you for stopping by and listening to my poetic prose about sipping coffee or tea and chatting with a friend. I hope you are able to enjoy a beverage with those who lift you up, even if done behind a mask. Enjoy your weekend. Be well. Michele 💕

If you are new to this site, welcome! I hope that you enjoy my Saturday posts. Well, Michele, what would we chat about should we meet for coffee or tea? “Of cabbages and Kings, of clouds and other things…” I love your thoughtful, honest poetic exclamation so much. It caused me to stop and think about how much of our precious time we waste debating issues that divide us—and that we will never agree upon. We could be talking about beauty…words…poetry, etc. But, aw, just who of our friends would want to meet and talk about such? You and I should definitely meet and discuss things that cannot be debated.

  2. I would love to meet you for coffee, Mitchele and I am sure we would soak up each other’s presence. Being around you is comforting even though it’s virtual but I can almost feel your beautiful presence. Thank you for the coffee and the poetry .. some blessing you are in these times. Have yourself a gorgeous Sunday. But stay safe.

    1. Your heartfelt words are making my morning coffee even better. Thank you. I had no way of knowing, just over a year ago when I started this blog, how writing and sharing would give me a connection to special people who brighten my day, with encouragement and their own unique words. Of course, none of us could have known just how cherished that would be during these socially distant and strange times. Your poetry is a gift that I always look forward to reading. 💐 My Sunday is off to a gorgeous start. I will stay safe, you too. 🙏🏻

    1. Walking the dog while listening to poetry sounds like a lovely time. Thank you for listening and for taking the time to share your thoughts. 😊 As a long time teacher, I love reading aloud. Hearing the words helps me craft the lines and I believe poems, like songs should be heard. I too love to hear authors read or recite their work. 🙏🏻
