A Writer’s Dream
Turning the key to her multi-million dollar spread
a setting she dreamed, never expecting to step in
a grand greeter showing off its polished white grin
rippling replies, like her own, replayed her excited hello
key securely slipped, bag dropped, down the hall she danced
spinning, sliding, skipping, and shimmying from one room to the next
pausing her joyous steps just long enough to test pillow-topped beds
her dancing and exploring continued into a blissful evening that stretched
a sunrise seen for the first time by manicured greens, along the pool’s edge
her senses overwhelmed with fragrant roses, but her mind was not convinced
wanting to believe in the petal’s plea, she closed her eyes and inhaled a deep breath
opening her eyes and exhaling doubt, she embraced the view, however untrue
…
no longer just a guest-writer testing out beds, she and the lavish spread were in lockstep
hosting friends, old and new, extravagant meals served, with the help of a five-star chef
late night entertaining blurred the hours, disturbed her sleep, and silenced her words
waking at noon, ignoring the lettered keys that had unlocked this world
reaching instead for her jingly keys, a designer purse, and new stilettos
rushing to no destination, with a scattered attention, she drove
meeting a friend for coffee, or a drive to the shore
carefree living, she was enjoying; each day brought more
an escape from the word search, struggle, and toil
…
Then
on a day that began like every other day
something felt off; something was amiss
it was her – she had lost her way
the halls, the dining, and the heels
had consumed her inner bliss
distractions losing their allure and their appeal
the joy that brought her there was no longer found
on the sprawling and enchanting ground
where roses charmed her with their scent
capturing her words when she released a breath
spiraling down stems into the earth, stories left unsaid
waking the worms and turning the next bloom into the most vibrant
…
she kicked off her heels –
no longer needed where she was going
she snipped a charming dozen
before hitting the road
Then
she traded in her mansion key
for a just-right
writing cottage by the sea

Let’s keep dreaming and creating, writers. Our words can take us anywhere and everywhere!

Be well, Michele
a Poet’s News
My writing week began with a special post about a local art gallery displaying three of my daughter’s prints and two of my poems and I am ending my writing week with another special share; this one is about one poem I wrote five months ago during the National Poetry Month. My poem was written in response to prompt #4 – “The Place I’m From,” given by the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing at Arizona State University. The Center promoted poetry month by publishing different prompts each day. They also called for poetry submissions, based on their prompts, with selected poems being included in a future anthology.
I submitted three poems in May and recently learned that my poem, “Buried Roots,” was selected for inclusion in the ASU Piper Center Anthology, and they invited me to participate in their launch party tonight! I am honored and excited to read my poem this evening. 😊 My poem, “Buried Roots” will be available only through the Anthology, which I will share when available. Revisiting the Piper Writing Center’s prompt #4 got me thinking about the idea of “home” earlier this week, which led me to the fertile land of make-believe and today’s poem, “A Writer’s Dream.”

Another great read to start my Saturday. So creative to type the poem in an hour-glass shape to match your photo. I like the idea of getting back to your “roots”—back to earth to open the writing paths in your brain. It’s been touching reality and looking backwards that has allowed me to understand that I DO have something worth penning and leaving for my future family generations.

Thank you for starting your Saturday with me. 😄 Funny that you say that about the hour-glass … it was not intentional, at least not with my conscious thought. 😁 I typed, then noticed the shape. The words were in control, I suppose. Yes, you certainly have a rich lifetime worth penning. ✍🏼 Reflection brings the greatest learning too. 🤗

I loved that the narrator took off her heels in order to truly enjoy life! I wrote a poem on this subject but I haven’t published it yet. Congratulations on your publication and I hope you really enjoy the party! 😊 🎉

Thank you Ingrid, for both your comments on the poem and regarding the party and publication. 🙏🏼🎉 I suppose there are many metaphors for walking through life barefoot. One of the dance forms I do is done barefoot – I love the connection to the earth. 🥰 I also love being able to imagine and create through words. Isn’t it wonderful fellow poet/writer? 😄

It is so wonderful! I do yoga barefoot and it’s best outdoors too – not at this time of year though 🥶

Love outdoor yoga! The best place for it. With temps dropping here, now it is finally safe to do so. Otherwise, summer outdoor yoga = extreme hot yoga! 😓

Thank you for reading and taking the time to respond. 😊 I had fun writing this lavish tale about a writer “living the dream,” then realizing it wasn’t the dream after all. 🤔
