Being a Woman – Forthcoming

Separated by state borders when the pandemic hijacked our lives – my view is of saguaro cacti, her view is of tall pines. Poems, illustrations, and shared files would bring us together and shorten the miles. A mother-daughter collaboration that began with lines I wrote in the fall of 2019, after a teenage memory was released. I saw myself standing in the front row, excited to take a yearbook group photo. My eyes were shining, my teen face was aglow, until a teacher said, “hide your full figure… move to the back row.” Erased smile and glow, with head held low, I did go. On my way to the back, I met stares that watched each step (some shocked, others sympathetic). No one spoke up, including me. An awkward silence before we all said, “Cheese.” It was just a moment in a lifetime of moments. It did not break me or send me spiraling in despair, but on that fall day when that humiliated girl did reappear, I put pen to paper, and spilled lines that allowed the silenced one to return to the front and speak up. The poem that came through, “My Curves,” became the first poem in a collection of poems that highlight situations that made me feel less than my glorious womanhood. A collection of relatable experiences, poetically retold.

A second collection would follow the curves found in my first poem and from my cursive pen. This collection removed the me and ushered in the voices of many women. Poems written to empower the reader, also strengthened and upheld me, during a summer of lockdown and intensive heat. Each poem given to an illustrator, Sammi Lee, who in turn drew curves, animating my words with her digital pen. Our third collection was just released and with its final presentation, we are most pleased. Like all the poems that came before, the third collection surprised this poet, but I did not question or challenge their arrival; I let the words flow. Sometimes a soul-searching struggle, other times a tumble, the pages I began to fill. Ideas transformed into poetic stories that feature courageous speakers, either from my imagination or who have lived before. These forthcoming poems delivered to an artist, whose lifeforce was once nurtured and protected within me, became more than an illustration task to complete. These forthcoming poems bring lessons of love, wisdom, courage, and strength that the writing mother and drawing daughter, with their flowing pens, together did weave.
💕

We are most excited to share our Being a Woman – Forthcoming Collection. We want to thank everyone who has supported us over the past year on our womanly journey. I previously shared a Sammi illustration along with my first poem from our third collection, “Sunrise Forthcoming.” If you are new to my site or you missed it, here you go~ https://myinspiredlife.org/2021/01/23/sunrise-forthcoming/

Artist, Sammi Lee cannot be with me to celebrate this book release, because she is one week away from completing her art and technology degree! 👩‍🎓 WooooHooooo! She will now have more time to illustrate for me. 😂 Thank you for visiting, reading, and previewing. Be Well. 💗 Michele

  1. Being a Woman as you explaiined here is deep,
but being a woman is constant, deep, and complete when Woman realize the facts below:

    *Being A Woman*

Woman is the Mother of Mankind
Woman is the Moral Fiber of Civilization
    Woman is Man’s First Teacher
    Woman is Smarter than Man
Woman if you encounter a Man smarter than a woman
Woman you meet 1 out of 100 with 99 hanging in the balance

    1. Thank you so much. 😊 This collection took longer than anticipated, followed by an author proof that was lost in the mail, but we are so delighted and excited to share our poems and drawings, that were created with great care. 🥰 Thank you for your ongoing support.

The publishing process, after the writing, takes endurance and perseverance. But the end result is always worth it- so says the author of one ebook lol 😂

      2. So true. It seems like the work really begins after the writing and editing is complete (if it ever really is). I learned many things about publishing products with drawings, especially when the artist draws lines to the edge of the page. A beautiful effect, but it gets a bit fussy in the printing review process. 🤦‍♀️ I love your eBook! That reminds me… I need to write a five-star review for you! A little late, apologies. 😄

Our work sparked many meaningful conversations about womanhood and creativity. ✨

      1. Thank you! I will be creating and releasing an eBook for this third collection in the next few weeks. 😃 The paperback format best highlights Sammi’s drawings, but I am not sure if they are available where you are. I would be most appreciative if you were to let me know. Thank you.

    1. Our third one was the most challenging to finish, with the holidays, Sammi’s busy school/work schedule, lost author proofs, pandemic fatigue… but we did it and this is our favorite of the three. 😀 Thank you for supporting us with your celebratory words!

      2. It has been a fun, rewarding, and creative journey, working with Sammi – joined by the voices of dozens of women – some reflections of my experiences, others imagined, some historical, and others no longer with us. ❤♥ Getting lost in creativity also delivered joy during our locked-up living. 💖 Thank you my star-traveling sister.

    1. Thank you, Nico, for following our writing and drawing journey. It was starting to feel like a third collection was not going to happen. I am so glad we kept at it and it was released on 3/3/21(3) and during National Women’s History Month.👏🏻 Everything works out as it is supposed to, in its own time, which is often not ours and beyond our control.

Last February I published a poem, titled, “Early Morning Whispers,” about how I often woke at 3:33 AM when I was carrying artist Sammi. When I (finally) published this collection a few days ago and saw the date, I smiled and was not too surprised. I do not think of myself as a courageous person, but I do appreciate you writing that and for your visits here. 🙏🏻

I am so grateful and blessed to have a daughter willing to join me on the journey – one who creates beautiful art – I am doubly blessed! I have the eBook, with you work, in my inbox. I look forward to diving in! Best wishes to you too.

  4. An eloquent story and I love that it is released into the world at this timely time! International Women’s Day is tomorrow and words in celebration of womanhood and acceptance/transition/self-love stories are not only welcome but needed.
‘Being A Woman’ looks like a beautifully conceived and illustrated series; from the artwork I have seen it invites thought and lends, no doubt, new meaning to your layered writing.
    May the words flow! ❤

    1. Thank you for your encouragement and intuitive understanding of our project, Jaya. I am pleased we landed behind our schedule, because releasing during the Women’s History Month and just before International Women’s Day is perfect! Yes, Sammi’s artwork adds a beautiful layer to the collections, and the combining mom/daughter efforts is special too. Have a joyous day of celebration tomorrow and all month long! 👭

      3. It sure was, I remember them well! My daughter is in Business school getting her NBA and is graduating in May but we have no idea what’s in store for her either. Hard they missed so many of the joys of being in person but it opened up many other opportunities for her. Enjoy your time together and yes, lots to celebrate! Thanks and you have a good one too! 💖

      4. Cindy, that is fantastic news! How exciting for your daughter, you, and your family. A long journey for her, with a finish line in sight. Regardless of the degree/program, online learning has been challenging and limiting at times, but they have persevered and adapted, which will serve them (and others) well, and yes, I agree, opportunities will come from that. Thank you. 💖

It’s so true and she’s been working full time and school for quite a long time and is ready to move into her next chapter. Yes, perserverence is key, I so agree! You’re so welcome and thank you! 💖
