Little Secret

This poem, “Little Secret,” is from my second poetry collection, Being a Woman – Becoming, illustrated by artist Sammi Lee. This version has been modified from my original poem, including additional lines added at the end. This is my empowered collection written with young adults in mind, however, this poem and the others contained in this collection have empowering messages for all readers. ✨

Thank you for visiting, reading, and listening. I hope my poem offers a dose of motivation for those working on “wild dreams.” I believe in you! 🌟 Be well. 💗 Michele

  1. Michele, your words resonate so strongly with me, as I continue to fight for my dreams…sometimes all you need are the right people to believe in you starting, of course, with believing in yourself!

    1. Not intentional, but I love when poems structure themselves into interesting shapes. 😁 I will never say no to a beautiful dress. 👗 Thank you for noticing, Krissy, and yes to dreams! May we never lose them. 💖 They give life meaning and purpose. Our inner guidance. ✨

    1. Dream, believe, and actualize. Yes! So simple! 😆 Of course we’ve lived long enough to know it is not, but the challenges and struggles make the dreamers and doers stronger and the rewards sweeter. ✨ Thank you, Phil. You too! 🌄

  3. Love this and the last lines are inspiring especially where you say the right people will show up and sometimes just one person can make a difference. Your words are so true and it only takes one person to believe in you and show their support. The photo you chose is also pretty wonderful and powerful.

    1. I am enjoying the feedback about the last two lines. Thank you for contributing to that dialogue. 🌻Isn’t it true… one person can have a greater positive impact on us than a million people. It is more about authenticity and connection than numbers. ✨ Thanks for mentioning the photo. It isn’t anything that I would have imagined for this poem, but when I came across it, I instantly thought of this poem. Thus, a post was born. 😆

  4. The secret of a lie that must be destroyed…wow Michele, there are so many moving and encouraging angles from this amazing poem you created. There is so much to think about as dreams arrive for a reason and often for a season. You have given us so much to think about and to strive for. What a beautiful poem from a beautiful poet.

Thank you for sharing a piece of your dream with us my dancing partna’! 🤗💖😊🎆😉🌟✨🥰🦋 Hugs and smooches!!! 😘💋😘💋😘

    1. Kym, your comment has given me a lot to think about. I love the exchange! I thought a lot about the first line you mentioned, and different scenarios where this may be true – societal norms that remain status quo, even though they ultimately limit people. This is certainly true in public school settings. I appreciate that you too found different angles with this poem. For a season and reason – yes! Sometimes they get buried by life and we find them again. 💖 Thank you for shining an insightful light on this poem and for shining your radiant light on me. You are a sparkling gem! 💎💖

Dancing partna – yeah, you know it! Let’s dance, let’s shout, shake your body down to the ground! 💃🏽🎶💃🏻

      1. Michele, the depth of your perspective is absolutely mind-blowing on a whole different dimension and very insightful as well. Like I said before, you put it out there and it gives us something bite-size to chew on and to ruminate within. 🤗💖😘

I appreciate how you take your personal experiences and weave them into a classroom level of awareness that is not too philosophical, but easy to digest. Thank you so much for that my dear friend. While I continue to shake my body down to the ground…Now…let’s dance! 💃🏼🎶👠🎸✨🎵🥁💃🏽

      2. A different dimension, like the Twilight Zone. 😆 I am teasing you, Kymbelina. Thank you very much for broadening my awareness and for receiving my words with an openness and a graciousness that leaves me speechless but most appreciative. 😊 I will dance to that! 🥂💃🏽💃🏻🎶💓

  5. Beauty is an understatement, Dear Michele! This piece is poignant and full of womanly wisdom. I especially loved this line : Dreams arrives for a reason…. Yes, the little secret turns out to be sort of destiny calling your name, haha!

Thank you for composing this poetic treat and sharing of this radiant gem!

    1. Ahh, you are a sweetheart, Annabel. Thank you. 🌼 It was enjoyable creating poetry collections with Sammi – now, having the opportunity to share poems publicly and discuss them is quite fun! “… destiny calling your name” – I love that! 👏🏻 Let’s be sure to listen! I don’t have to tell you that. 😊 It is a privilege and pleasure. Thank YOU for reading and contributing to the meaningful poetic discussion!

      1. Dear Michele, you couldn’t be more beautiful and loving! 💕👩🏻‍🦰Sammi is very lucky to have you and she did a world-class job illustrating your collection. The drawing of the book cover is simply stunning (not sure if we have more drawings in the book 📖). I’m interested in getting the book and have shared the links to my friends. More girls will benefit from your work and your poetry is more than a gift!💗🙏

      2. My apologies, sweet and talented Annabel, for my late response. I was cleaning up my spam folder, which led me to your beautiful comment. 💖 Thank you! I agree, Sammi’s cover drawings are stunning. The three collections do include her illustrations on the inside as well. Side note: we learned a great deal about how to merge drawings and poems through this collaboration process. 😅 I am honored that you are interested in our books and beyond grateful that you shared the links with friends. Supporting independent artists is a passion of mine – thank you for doing the same for us. 🙏🏻 Have a wonderful week! 🌞🩰✍🏻

  6. Your words are always so magical and inspirational. I believe, follow, and share the same inspirations with my readers, my friends, and whomever I can pull over to listen. It’s not always easy to believe, especially when bad things happen that are totally out of your control. But you have the choice to let the circumstances take over and ruin you or let them flow over you and you keep on going. Keep on believing. I’m a follower of the second way of life.

    1. Thank you for witnessing in my writing what I feel flowing through me when I write. ✍🏻 I do see that inspirational vibe in your blog. I am grateful to have connected with you – kindred dream weaver! ✨ “not always easy to believe” – no doubt! Life can be dark and depressing and seem hopeless. I have been there. That is probably why I am so grateful for the light. The older I get the more I come to understand that dreams and goals give life greater purpose, they put a smile on our face and give us a reason to get out of bed in the morning, but the true joy is in the journey, the process.

  7. We lose part of our souls first when we are given those looks. I pray we come to our senses and see we are indeed all worthy of achieving. Not only the elite, but for all.
Lovely poem. Adore the encouragement. Thanks for sharing. Tweet-Tweeted. Yay.

    1. Those looks! They say so much without saying a word. ☹️ “For all” – Amen to that. Generally speaking, it does seem the younger generation is bolder and stronger in their dream-believing status. Of course, discipline and consistency are needed too. Thank you, Selma. 🙏🏻 I am grateful for your readership and support. I am enjoying your daily poems this month. 👏🏻

    1. Yes, being taught to listen to intuition and encouraged to pursue passions hasn’t been the norm (in most homes and school settings), but the good news is I think things are shifting with the younger generation. That shift should grow stronger with their children, if they have any. 😆 Many aren’t. Thank you, Cindy. 😊💗

  8. This is so true of both men and women! Labels and discouragement keeps us from many dreams that we could pursue. We need cheerleaders rather than critics to have our back and send us on our way! Sometimes we load this secret on ourselves. It is amazing what one can become if encouraged to pursue their dreams. Well done.

  10. How awesome a poem! I truly feel like this mirrors the attitude of so many people nowadays; society is not so encouraging of dreams and always people do very little instead of truly supporting.

I have always been ambitious. Since the age of nine, I have known what I want to do and I have done it. Yet, as I grew and became more aware of people’s thoughts and attitudes, I realized too many people are patronizing of dreams. They say, “Yes, how wonderful you want to be a writer,” but what their eyes say is, “Poor young thing with her hopes! She’ll discover she’ll have to be something else if she wants to make it in THIS world.”

That may be true to the people who have discarded their dreams and settled for what it takes to ‘get by’, but it will never be true for me and, in an effort to pay forward the support and encouragement I received, I am both supportive and encouraging of dreams. When people tell me their hopes and end with a little sigh of, “Oh, well, it will never happen!” my response is “Why?”

    How empowering that is!

    1. Thank you, Jaya! I am deeply touched by your comment. I am not surprised by your early awareness of your own dreams. I am so glad you listened to your own guidance and did not let anyone convince you otherwise. Look at what you have already accomplished! Strong talent, strong conviction, and work ethic equals amazing results! People, including parents and teachers, do not always support the pursuit of dreams. Sometimes out of a need to protect or maybe they truly don’t see a possibility, but I do believe we should listen to that inner voice. Mine was a buried for many years. To be listening to that voice at this point in my life is energizing, empowering, and exciting. ✨ I love your response… why? Perfect and powerful!

  11. This poem deeply touches me, it is a true story in so mamy versions for so many of us. Dreams seem foolish when met with such unaware responses and projections. Entire lifetimes and worlds of individuals are altered under the influence. A constant fuel is needed to keep the flame of dreams and inspiration flickering – no matter what to keep moving in the direction.

  12. A deeply powerful message for so many real-life situations we find ourselves in, to keep powering forward through the scornful disdain and snide put-downs. You expressed those doubts and inner anxieties so perfectly here! 🙂
