Twilight’s First Blush

There was a time
when I bathed
in a certain magic
found only during
the twilight hours.
A stillness.
A soft pinkness.
An advantage
over the sleepers,
sleeping away
the most enchanting
part of the day.

I was a witness
to the sun’s first
appearance
with eyes
not rested
from the night before.
Eyes, glistening and alert,
especially my third.

Watching the first faint rays
appear along the hazy horizon
while owning the road,
after dancing away
the night before.
Driving toward the
soft pink swirling
with creamy gold,
folding me into
the center
of her rapture.

When night has
extended her reach
and minds have
pushed past sleep
along the edge
is where they meet.

Along the edge
there is a great
temptation to fall.
In love.
Into the deep.
Into a strong belief.
All fear released.
In that soft pink
and liquid gold
there is a boldness
that can make one
seem foolish
to those asleep.

Having swallowed
the boldness
he proposed.
I said, “No.”
I was seventeen.
He was on military leave.
He persisted,
devoting his love to me.
We had just met,
but he believed
it was (true) love
at first sight.
I watched his expression
change from pleading passion
to defeated acceptance
under the gentle hues
of the delicate twilight.

If the first blush of
twilight’s magical hue
finds me now,
it’s in slivers
peeking thru,
guiding my way
to the loo,
after I stumble
from sleep.
Eyes mostly closed
I stub my toe
on my book
dropped to the floor,
a few hours
before.

I recently drove through a part of the valley that reminded me of a twilight memory. ✨ Thus a poem was born. Thank you for visiting, reading, and viewing. Be well. 💗 Michele

  1. Oh my goodness, Michele, you had me so wrapped up in the magic of twilight. How romantic and so realistic, until you made me wake up. LOL 🥱📚😲

    1. Wrapped in the magic of twilight. I love that, Kymbelina! 💖 Sounds sparkly, warm, enveloping, and inspiring! Guess I interrupted that romantic scene with a restroom break. 😂 Thank you for sharing that excerpt. Made me laugh. I should pull an all-nighter and see if the magic is still there. Of course, I will need my glasses to see the sparkly detail. 🤣 I appreciate your fun and supportive spirit, dancing Maven of Motivation! 💃🏽🎶🌃🌄✨

      2. 😁 Dancing all night then driving toward the sparkly sunrise sounds more fun and graceful than stumbling and stubbing! 😂 I will let you know if I accomplish this again, then I will sleep the remainder of the day. 😴 May have to kick off my heels, then pull over and take a nap after! 😆 Hugs and sweet dreams to you, Kymbelina. 🧚🏽

    1. I am not sure how much wisdom I had at that age, but I knew enough to know I wasn’t ready for marriage. 😱 He was sweet, but goodness! Thank you, Rebecca for recognizing I had some intelligence. 🙏🏻😌 I am pleased you enjoyed my twilight recollections.

    1. I appreciate your comment. Thank you, Ingrid! It is a magical time. 💖 It also used to be a very quiet time – hardly anyone out at that hour. Now, in a metropolis of around 6 million, it is a city that never sleeps. I miss that peaceful golden time. It felt like having access to (quiet) secrets. ✨

    1. Thank you very much, Lincol. It’s a pleasure to be read! 😊 These are true twilight tales. The younger me staying up all night, dancing the night away, then greeting the sun, vs. me now, sleeping the night away until nature calls. 😁 I do see how this reads like a dream. Enchanted nights. ✨ Warm regards to you!

  4. A great poem Michele! I love this line…
    When night has
    extended her reach
    and minds have
    pushed past sleep
    along the edge
    is where they meet.

And interesting ending with most likely was a wise decision on your part! Nothing like the blush of a broken heart fading into shadows!
