Honey Thunder

My disposition may drip sweet
            like prickly pear honey,
                        honey,
and I may step lightly on my toes
and on the feelings of others,
but I ain’t no fragile lady who needs protection
or a broken bird that needs fixin’.
I sure as hell ain’t no wind-up doll
            here for your pleasin’.
***
For too long, I tried to shrink
the thunder in my thighs –
polite modesty kept me confined
to a life of One Size Fits All.
In 2019 I picked up a writer’s pen
            and began rewriting
            that nonsense.
***
My strong thighs aren’t engaged
            to chase anyone or anything
            that ain’t for me.
They are used to climb mountains,
            ride the trails,
            leap through my life,
and squeeze tight to my dreams.
With them, I could also snap a neck,
            if need be.

I wrote this poem last week, during my “What Moves You? (blog challenge)” writing session. I clearly have some energy moving through me! ⛈️ The last two lines of this poem made me think of another Lee who masterfully kicked his way through life: Mr. Bruce Lee. He snapped a few necks too. 🙃

Twelve more days before the “Moving” blog challenge begins. I am excited to join others who are getting their move on! 🙌🏻 A chance to win beautiful art! More details and reminders next week.

Have a wonderful week. Thanks for visiting! Be well. 💃🏻 Michele

      1. I don’t write about it, except for a rare comment. Like now. 😁 Cheese sneaks in from time to time when eating out, but otherwise I am dedicated to my veggies and vegan protein drinks. 🥦

    1. We aren’t quiet rain. We are mighty thunder!! I love your description: “Kick-ass piece” – literally! 😁 Thanks so much, Dawn!

The challenge is fairly straightforward. Between May 15th and May 20th post a photo of yourself doing something fitness related (your choice) along with complementary writing about the experience (style and form your choice, a few words are fine, NTE 300 words). If you aren’t comfortable being in the photo, no problem, just take a photo of the scene (walking trail, jump rope, etc.). Then ping back to my 4/29 post.

Participants will have a chance to win a GC for the Mintaka Collection (my daughter’s cool art). Feel free to check out the original post 4/29 and let me know if you have further questions. 😊

    1. Hi Thattamma! I am glad you found my poem fascinating. Thank you. Some people show up confident, others, like me, earn it. I was an extremely shy kid. Beautiful and inspiring thoughts. 🙏🏻 Cheers to dances and dreams! 😘🤗 Enjoy your day!

    1. Thanks so much, Tom! Who doesn’t love a preachy queen. 😂 She showed up and I was a bit defenseless to stop her, so I let her speak. I think she might be sticking around for a while. 😁 🙏🏻

    1. 🔊 🙌🏻 Thank you, for acknowledging that, Nancy. That means a lot to me. You are very kind. 🙏🏻 Like a lot of women, and men, I had my share of unwanted attention and body shaming when I was younger, and actually at least once in an adult jazz class. Not cool! I’ve learned to love and appreciate my petiteness with thighs of greatness! 😁 I think the poems are the young me speaking up. Better late than never! I derive great joy from giving others the courage and confidence to do the same. 💗

      1. I do think it is a relatable experience, for many. 😔 I believe strongly in the power of writing and other art to transform and reframe negative experiences into lessons, strengths, and new insights. Thank you, Nancy! 🦋

    1. Thanks so much for your enthusiastic reaction to my post. I almost didn’t share it. We are learning to push through some discomfort, aren’t we? Bravo on your podcast!! 🙌🏻 I don’t think “getting out of your comfort zone” means abandoning core values or common sense but I do think it means learning to quiet the inner critic, the one who breeds fear. So, cheers for a few wins this week! Now we can rest. haha

    1. I am delighted that you caught this one! I had some thunder and fire moving through me that day. 🔥There are so many things I love about writing, not the least of which is to let out some younger venting! To speak up for her! Right? Thank you!
